Štěpán Zavřel - Title & Date Unknown
I recently stumbled upon the work of children's book illustrator Štěpán Zavřel (1932-1999). The Czech artist escaped Eastern Europe in 1959 and consequently established the biggest centre for children’s book illustration in Europe, dubbed 'Zavřel-Land', in Rugolo 60km north of Venice. Despite his importance and influence as an illustrator, he still remains largely unknown in his home country and there are few examples of his work online. This is a real shame because his work is beautiful and firmly rooted in a European tradition. His designs are rich in colour, character and pattern, with a certain warmth of imagination and nostalgia of childhood.
More examples of his work can be seen HERE
