Andy Warhol / Paul Morrissey - Flesh, 1968 (Flim Still)

For any fan of The Smiths, this film still from Warhol's Flesh will be very familiar. The cropped torso of Joe Dallesandro formed the cover image of The Smiths' self-titled debut album (seen HERE), and paved the way for a rich collection of cover photography appropriated from art, films and popular culture. Tracing the sources of these images reveals a rich and often hidden association with Morrissey - the homoeroticism of George Omara seen on the Hand In Glove cover, his fascination with Vivian Nicolson (seen HERE with Morrissey on The South Bank Show), screen idols, rebellious youth, etc.
