One of the highlights of a recent visit to Winchester Cathedral was seeing the medieval frescos in the Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher. They were discovered in the 1960s underneath 13th Century painting during their restoration, and probably date c.1175-85. I love the thought that pre-Reformation, all churches would've been covered in paintings and patterns. It's a shame that Protestantism thought it better to whitewash the walls...
